The Harvard MBA Application Process
Harvard Business School (HBS) employs a holistic admissions process, evaluating the applicant’s entire profile, not just quantitative data.
Deadlines:
Round 1: September 03, 2025
Round 2: January 05, 2026
Round 2+2: April 22, 2026
Application Requirements:
1. Completed Application Form: The online application must be completed through the HBS website.
2. Official Transcripts: Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended must be uploaded.
3. GMAT or GRE Scores: Applicants must submit scores from either the GMAT or GRE.
4. Resume: A current resume detailing work experience, education, and accomplishments. HBS does not have a preferred format.
5. Essays: HBS has three essays this year; one business-minded, one leadership-focused, and one growth-oriented. See below for more information on how to tackle these questions.
6. Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation are required from individuals who can assess the applicant’s leadership potential and professional capabilities. Typically, one of these recommendations will be from a direct supervisor, though there are situations in which this is not necessary.
7. Interview: Candidates selected for an interview will participate in a personal interview, which may be conducted in person or virtually.
8. English Language Proficiency: Non-native English speakers may need to demonstrate English proficiency through TOEFL or IELTS scores, depending on their educational background.
9. Application Fee: A non-refundable application fee of $250 is required; fee waivers may be available for applicants who meet specific financial criteria.
Harvard Business School (HBS) MBA Essay Tips
When crafting your response to HBS’s essay questions, focus on authenticity and vulnerability. While strong academic credentials are essential, the admissions committee seeks candidates who demonstrate self-awareness, intellectual curiosity, and a compelling personal narrative. Instead of simply listing accomplishments, delve into the one or two pivotal experiences that have profoundly shaped your identity and professional aspirations. Be specific about the challenges you faced, your approach to overcoming them, and the resulting lessons learned. This will showcase your resilience, growth mindset, and capacity for self-reflection – qualities highly valued at HBS. Use vivid storytelling to “show, don’t tell,” bringing your journey to life and demonstrating your unique perspective.
The three essays are as follows:
1. Business-Minded Essay
Please reflect on how your choices have influenced your career path and aspirations. (300 words)
The first essay prompt centers around the “why” behind your career choices to-date and your aspirations for the future. We recommend starting by writing down key inflection points or “aha” moments in your past that sparked your interest in using business as a force for good. It’s important to convey not just what you hope to accomplish, but also why it matters to you and how you plan to leverage your unique background and insights to make a difference.
2. Leadership-Focused Essay
What experiences have shaped how you invest in others and how you lead? (up to 250 words)
In this question, HBS is asking you to elaborate on both who you are as a leader and how you’ve had an impact. In other words, this essay must reveal your character, your special brand of leadership, and how you lead – and how those have left a mark on others. Anything is fair game here so get creative. To select the best story here, we recommend writing down all of the key moments in your life where you demonstrated leadership, regardless of whether it was in a formal role. Then from that list, choose your proudest or most defining experience.
3. Growth-Oriented Essay
Curiosity can be seen in many ways. Please share an example of how you have demonstrated curiosity and how that has influenced your growth. (up to 250 words)
If the first two questions put you in the driver’s seat of impact, the third question reverses the roles and asks you to discuss a time when you’ve been impacted. More specifically, the question is asking about a time when you sought out a new experience, new knowledge, a new perspective, or any other avenue that was the opposite of certainty. Unlike the other questions that ask you to connect the dots between multiple experiences, this question is asking you to recount one specific story or anecdote.

What is the minimum GMAT score for HBS?
While there is no official “minimum” GMAT score for HBS, the reported middle 80% GMAT score range for admitted students is typically between 690 and 770 (legacy test) and between 645 and 735 (GMAT Focus), indicating that a score significantly below 690 (or equivalent Focus score) would be considered very weak for admission consideration.
Does HBS prefer the GRE or the GMAT?
From HBS’ website, “…we do not have a preference toward one test or the other”, and they mean it. They truly do not have a preference, so we recommend choosing whichever exam is a better fit for you.
What is the cost of attending HBS?

Does HBS offer scholarships or financial aid?
