2026-2027 Chicago Booth MBA Essay Analysis

Chicago Booth made waves in the MBA admissions world this year (2026-2027) by eliminating long-form required essays. Replacing its tradition of asking two questions with 250-word minimums are four short-answer prompts of 300 characters each. That’s about 50 words or 2 sentences. Or just a little longer than a tweet.

Sounds easy, right? Now before you start celebrating the demise of essays, stay with me because short doesn’t mean easy. In fact, the extremely limited word count now means that you have limited real estate to tell your story. That also means you have to be crystal clear about your brand and career goals and what you want the Booth admissions committee to take away from your application. You must be ruthless with every word. 

Chicago Booth MBA Essay Questions

All candidates are required to submit responses to the following four prompts (300 character limit per response):

1. What is your immediate post-MBA career goal?
2. What is your long-term post-MBA career goal?
3. Upload an image and explain its significance to you.
4. Share a fun fact or something unique about yourself.

Optional Essay: Is there any unclear information in your application that needs further explanation or additional details you would like to share with the Admissions Committee? If so, please use this section to clarify. (300 word maximum)

Reapplicant Question: Upon reflection, how has your perspective regarding your future, Chicago Booth, and/or getting an MBA changed since the time of your last application? (Maximum 300 words)

What Makes Chicago Booth Stand Out

Our overarching piece of advice for a successful Booth application is to effectively and authentically communicate ‘why Booth’. Booth has a unique culture and seeks students who, while diverse in many ways, share in its ‘defining traits’. They are intellectually curious, highly independent, and unafraid of bold ideas.

In a recent conversation with Donna Swinford, Associate Dean for Student Recruitment and Admissions at Chicago Booth, she further shared with us that Booth students are flexible and resilient – they are true go-getters who can “bounce back from setbacks”. She added that the ability to navigate ambiguity without needing explicit directions or clarity was equally important.

So, before you begin drafting your short-answers, give some serious thought to how you embody these characteristics and let this guide the content of your writing.

Chicago Booth MBA Essay Tips

Short-Answer Prompts 1 & 2 Are Focused On Your Professional Goals

These questions are about your career goals and therefore should be written in parallel.

In Prompt 1, Booth asks you to be specific and direct about what you want to do right after business school. Focus on the essential facts: job title, function, industry, target companies, geography, and/or other illustrative information. A strong answer here is realistic.

Your long-term goal is the most flexible regarding timeline; this could be as specific as a “dream” role or more senior leadership position down the line, but it’s also an opportunity to highlight the impact you hope to have or the problem you hope to solve.

If possible (depending upon word count), the second question is an excellent place to add context, such as how your long-term goals will develop, or your “why”. This additional insight helps you to stand out and lets the admissions committee get to know you on a deeper level.

Short-Answer Prompts 3 & 4 Get Personal

These questions are about the values, unique perspectives, or personal characteristics that distinguish you from other candidates. You should choose two different traits, one each for Prompt 3 and 4. Furthermore, we suggest that you highlight values or traits that align well to
Booth’s culture and ‘defining traits’.

For Prompt 3, we suggest immediately explaining what your chosen photo means to you (i.e. identifying the personal value, trait, perspective, etc.) and then providing an illustrative example of you living or using this in your life.

For Prompt 4, we suggest explaining the fun fact with illustrative examples or data. Then, note how this fun fact will positively influence or enrich your classmates or the Booth community. You may wish to include a specific school resource or club that you hope to participate in.

The Optional Essay Is Truly Optional

This essay provides you space to address any extenuating circumstances or weaknesses in your profile that warrant further explanation. It is not intended to be an additional opportunity to provide context to your career goals or highlight another accomplishment (as tempting as it may be).
