MBA Application Deadlines and Essays for 2026-2027
The 2026-2027 MBA application season is underway. Schools have released deadlines and essays for the upcoming cycle and there are plenty of changes from last year – some that surprised us more than others. Chicago Booth replaced its two essays with four short responses, Kellogg moved to a single written essay, NYU Stern dropped its longstanding “Change” essay, and Darden added a video essay. MIT Sloan moved from three rounds to two.
Which Round Should I Apply In?
The best round to apply in is the one in which your application materials are as strong as they can be. Round 1 is attractive to many applicants because no seats in the class have been filled yet. That said, the applicant pool is very competitive. Round 2 is typically the largest round, with a mix of application strength. Take the time you need to put together your strongest application, and remember that you can apply to some schools in Round 1 and others in Round 2 (although there are some downsides to splitting rounds). For more, read our article on Round 1 vs. Round 2.
Early Application Considerations
Some MBA programs offer Early Action or Early Decision options, allowing you to apply and receive a decision before the regular rounds. Early Decision is generally binding. If accepted, you commit to attend and withdraw other applications. Early Action is generally nonbinding, but check each school’s terms.
Applying early can improve your chances at some programs, especially when a binding commitment signals that the school is your first choice. Some programs also guarantee interviews for applicants who meet an early deadline, giving you another opportunity to make your case at a reach school.
These options can make sense if the school is a top choice and your application is ready. But don’t rush a weaker application to meet an early deadline or make a binding commitment to a school you’re still unsure about.
