Methodology & data sources
Every figure on this page comes from the school's most recently published class profile or admissions website. We refresh the data each year when the new class profiles drop. Class size, work experience, and demographic figures reflect the most recent entering class. GMAT scores show both the legacy GMAT and the new GMAT Focus where schools publish both. Salaries are starting base only, signing bonuses and equity are excluded so you can compare apples to apples. Acceptance rates are omitted for schools that do not publish them.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average GMAT (Focus) score at top MBA programs in 2026?
Across the top MBA programs in this comparison that report a GMAT Focus median, the average is roughly 668. Focus scores run lower numerically than legacy GMAT scores because the GMAT Focus uses a tighter 205 to 805 scale. A 668 Focus is roughly equivalent to a 720 on the legacy GMAT.
Which MBA programs have the highest acceptance rates?
For the 2026 cycle, the top MBAs with the highest reported acceptance rates are UNC Kenan-Flagler (38%), Vanderbilt Owen (36%), Washington Foster (34%), and a cluster at 33% including Texas McCombs and Emory Goizueta. These programs still produce strong post-MBA salary outcomes and can be attractive on a value basis.
Which MBA programs have the most selective acceptance rates?
Among the 2026 cycle programs in this comparison, the most selective full-time MBAs are Stanford GSB (7% admit rate), Harvard HBS (11%), U Penn Wharton (19%), MIT Sloan (19%), and UC-Berkeley Haas (21%). Single-digit and low-double-digit admit rates make these the toughest entry points among the top US programs.
Which MBA program has the highest average post-MBA salary?
Stanford GSB tops the list at $190,000, followed by U Penn Wharton ($185,000) and Harvard HBS ($184,500). Most of the M7 and several other top US programs cluster at $175,000. These numbers are base salary only and exclude signing bonuses, which typically add another $30,000 to $45,000 in year one.
Which MBA programs employ the highest percentage of graduates within 3 months?
UT McCombs leads at 95%, with Michigan Ross and Emory Goizueta tied at 92% and MIT Sloan at 91%. The figure tracks graduates employed within three months of graduation and is a sharper signal of program strength than acceptance rate or rank alone.
How big is the average MBA class at top business schools?
The average full-time MBA class size across the 28 programs in this comparison is roughly 381 students. The largest classes reach 982; the most intimate are around 102. Smaller programs often translate to more intimate communities and more personalized career coaching, while larger programs offer broader industry reach and alumni networks.
What is the difference between the legacy GMAT and the GMAT Focus?
The GMAT Focus, launched in late 2023, replaced the legacy GMAT in 2024. It uses a 205 to 805 scoring scale instead of the legacy 200 to 800 scale and tests only Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. The Analytical Writing Assessment is gone. Focus scores run lower numerically than legacy GMAT scores even though they measure the same underlying ability. We show both medians where schools still publish them.
Should I apply to MBA programs where my GMAT is below the median?
Yes, but strategically. Top MBA programs admit a meaningful share of candidates with below-median scores when the rest of the application is strong, particularly when a candidate brings standout work experience, leadership stories, or a differentiated career trajectory. The median is just a midpoint. Half of every admitted class scores below it.
How do international MBA programs compare to US programs?
International programs like INSEAD, London Business School, Cambridge Judge, and Oxford Saïd typically run 12 to 16 months versus the 21-month US standard, have higher international student percentages, and place graduates predominantly into consulting and finance. Average post-MBA salaries are lower in nominal terms. Pick a US program if your post-MBA career is US-based; pick an international program if you want a faster cycle, global cohort, and Europe or Asia placement.
When should I start the MBA application process for the 2026-2027 cycle?
The earlier the better. Most top MBA programs open applications in late June or early July with Round 1 deadlines in early to mid September. Strong applicants typically begin GMAT prep 9 to 12 months before submitting, draft school-specific essays 4 to 6 months out, and finalize recommenders 3 months out.
