2026-2027 Kellogg MBA Essay Analysis

For the 2026-2027 admissions cycle, the Kellogg School of Management has once again revised its MBA essay questions. Rather than asking applicants to write multiple essays covering career goals and leadership experiences, Kellogg has streamlined their long-form written requirements into a single essay that focuses on reflection and contribution. 

At first glance, this M7 program‘s new prompt appears simpler. In reality, it asks applicants to thoughtfully connect their past experiences, future ambitions, and readiness for business school while also explaining what they will bring to their classmates.

Below, we’ve included the full Kellogg MBA essay prompts for 2026-2027, followed by our analysis and tips to help you get started.

Kellogg MBA Essays & Short-Answers for 2026-2027

Essay Questions:

Main Essay (Required):

Part I: An MBA is a significant investment of time, energy, and resources, and the decision to pursue one deserves serious reflection. Tell us about the pivotal experiences and decisions that have brought you to this moment in your career, how they have shaped your ambitions, and why now is the right time to take this next step.

Part II: Now turn the lens outward: beyond what you hope to gain, what do you hope to contribute to the students who will learn alongside you? (550 words total for Part I and II combined)

Additional Information (Optional):

We know that life is full of extenuating circumstances. Whether you want to explain gaps in work experience, your choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance or something else, you can use this section to briefly tell us anything we need to know about your application. (280 words maximum)

Note: There are no longer additional required essays for those applying to a specialized MBA program such as MMM or MBAi.

Reapplicant Essay (Required):

How have you grown or changed personally and professionally since you previously applied and what steps have you taken to become the strongest candidate you can be? (250 words)

Please note these questions are located in the Career Goals section of the application. You will first choose from two drop-down menus an “Industry” and “Function” for your desired post-MBA career. The following questions appear after the drop-down menus.

Immediately following graduation: Beyond your industry and function selections above, describe the type of role(s) and organization(s) you are targeting. (500 characters)

Five years post-graduation: Describe where you expect your career to have progressed by this point. We are interested in the scope of responsibility and leadership you are working toward. (500 characters)

What Kellogg Is Looking For

Despite the changes to the essays, Kellogg’s values remain remarkably consistent. The school states that it values individuals who:

• Believe in strong, empathetic collaboration as a way to strengthen work, perspectives and outcomes.

Kellogg MBA Essay 

At its core, Kellogg’s essay asks two questions:

• Who are you, how did you get here, and why is now the right time for an MBA?
• What kind of classmate and community member will you be?

Part I: Reflect on the Experiences That Shaped You

Unlike a traditional career goals essay, this prompt is less about describing what you want to do and more about explaining how you developed your goals in the first place.

Many applicants make the mistake of trying to summarize their entire life story. Instead, focus on the handful of experiences and decisions that genuinely influenced your ambitions. These may come from your professional career, personal life, extracurricular activities, or any combination of the three.

There is no requirement that you begin with childhood or discuss personal experiences if they are not relevant. Rather than asking yourself how far back to go, ask yourself which experiences most directly explain why you are pursuing your goals today.

The best essays spend relatively little time recounting events and considerably more time reflecting on why those experiences mattered. What perspectives changed? What decisions did you make? What interests or frustrations shaped your thinking? Kellogg wants to understand your growth and intentionality.

Don’t Forget “Why Now?”

An equally important component of Part I is explaining why this is the right time to pursue an MBA.

Your response should demonstrate both readiness and self-awareness. You should show that you have accumulated experiences that will allow you to contribute meaningfully to your classmates while also recognizing the skills, perspectives, and experiences you still hope to gain in business school.

For some applicants, timing may also be influenced by developments within their industry or broader market trends that make pursuing an MBA particularly compelling today.

Part II: Focus on Your Classmates

The second part of the essay shifts the focus away from what you hope to gain and toward what you will contribute.

Notice that Kellogg specifically asks about “the students who will learn alongside you.” This means the school is interested in more than the clubs you plan to join or leadership positions you hope to hold. Instead, they want to understand how your experiences, perspectives, and personality will enrich the learning environment for those around you.

Think about the insights you will bring into classroom discussions, the ways you naturally collaborate with others, and how your background will help your classmates broaden their own perspectives.

The strongest responses paint a concrete picture of what it would be like to have you sitting in the classroom or working alongside you in a learning team.

Make the Essay Feel Cohesive

Although the prompt is divided into two parts, the best responses feel like one unified story rather than two separate essays.

Once you establish the experiences and perspectives that have shaped you in Part I, Part II should naturally build on those same themes by explaining how they will benefit the Kellogg community. Together, the essay should demonstrate a two-way fit: why this is the right next step for you and why Kellogg would be stronger because you are part of it.

Applicants will also answer two 500-character career questions within the application.

Immediately Following Graduation

Beyond selecting your desired industry and function, Kellogg asks you to describe the type of role and organization you hope to pursue immediately after business school.

Given the limited space, be direct and specific. Clearly identify the role you are targeting and the types of organizations where you hope to work.

Five Years After Graduation

Kellogg also asks where you expect your career to have progressed five years after graduation, with particular interest in the scope of responsibility and leadership you hope to achieve.

The best responses provide a concrete picture of your expected progression while demonstrating how your responsibilities and leadership will have expanded over time.

A Note on AI

This year, Kellogg also updated its guidance on artificial intelligence. The school acknowledges that AI can serve as a useful sounding board during reflection, but makes clear that the authorship of the essays must remain your own.

In other words, Kellogg wants to hear your voice, your reasoning, and your story. Those are ultimately the qualities the Admissions Committee is evaluating.
